What do smart thermostats do and why do I need one?

What do smart thermostats do and why do I need one?

A new smart thermostat lets you create and automate bespoke settings for your home’s heating system using your tablet or smartphone from anywhere in the world.

Smart thermostats can be programmed to react to external weather conditions and you can schedule timings for your heating to come on. They can also run automatically and learn your behaviours and self-programme to know when your heating needs to come on and off.

One of the biggest benefits of a smart thermostat is that they’ll significantly reduce your energy bills and end up paying for themselves over the course of a couple years.

In summary, a smart thermostat will:

  • Let you control your heating system from anywhere in the world on your mobile device
  • Learn your behaviour and automatically adjust your heating system accordingly
  • Save you money on your energy bills

What are the best thermostats?

There are a wide range of smart thermostat options to choose from, all have their own price ranges and benefits. Here’s an overview of the most popular smart thermostats:

Hive Active

Hive smart thermostats claim to save customers up to £120 a year on their energy bills, making it one of the most energy conscious thermostats around.

They’re also compatible with most boilers, making integration with your existing heating system easier.

With a Hive thermostat you’ll get geolocation, multizone, time programming and app control too.

Nest Learning

The Google-owned Nest thermostat is compatible with most boilers and is well-known for its intelligent behaviour learning capabilities and integration with other smart devices.

Next is more expensive than Hive, but comes with additional features that not all smart thermostats have, such as smart scheduling, geolocation, energy-saving tracking, multizone and hot water control.

Tado Smart

As with most smart thermostats, Tado connects to a wide range of smart devices and works with most types of boilers.

With a Tado smart thermostat, you will get geofencing, weather adaptation, open window detection, multi-room control, smart schedule, app control and healthy air assistant which provides tips on how to keep the air in your home healthier.

Honeywell Evohome

The Honeywell evohome system gives you precision control over each individual radiator, which is ideal if you have family members who prefer different temperatures.

You can control up to 12 zones (radiators) independently or set the temperature for your entire home from your mobile device.

Other features include zoning, scheduling, flexible control, scenario programming and hot water control.

Drayton Wiser

The Drayton Wiser thermostat is another popular device that comes with a cheaper price tag than other smart thermostats, which is handy if you’re on a budget.

In terms of features, the Drayton Wiser features on zonal heating works with Amazon Alex and Google Assistant. It also comes with a humidity sensor and app control as standard.

There are lots of smart thermostat options to choose from. Whichever you choose, we’ll be able to install your smart thermostat system and also link them to other smart devices in your home to create a seamless smart home device system.
